The best nutrition apps in Spain (2026): a comparison

Published · Vitaloop Labs

If you live in Spain and want to know what is really in what you eat, not just the calories, our answer is vitaloop. We are the team that builds it, so we are not neutral, and we say so up front. What we can promise is that everything we say about the other seven apps was checked on their own websites, help centres and Spanish App Store listings on 10 October 2026. Anything we could not confirm, we left out.

Summary: the best nutrition app for each case

  1. vitaloop: the most complete for anyone who lives and shops in Spain. Native in English, Spanish and Catalan, 42 nutrients, including for packaged products, and a smart assistant that explains your data.
  2. Cronometer: many nutrients, built on lab sources such as NCCDB.
  3. Fitia: meal plans and a chat coach.
  4. Yazio: calorie counting and intermittent fasting, very popular in Europe.
  5. MyFitnessPal: the biggest food database, with its AI coach and meal planner not available in Spain.
  6. Lifesum: meal plans, focused on macros.
  7. Foodvisor: photo logging and guided programmes, from France.
  8. Cal AI: counting calories from a photo.

How we compared them

We looked at what changes the daily life of someone who eats and shops in Spain: whether the app speaks your language and knows the local food, how much it tells you about what you eat (vitamins and minerals, not only calories), what happens with supermarket products, and whether the AI saves you work and helps you understand your data. Every fact about another app comes from its website, help centre or Spanish App Store listing, checked on 10 October 2026. Apps change often: if you spot something out of date, write to us and we will fix it.

Why packaged products matter so much

Because they are most of what we buy. According to the presentation of Spain's Food Consumption Report 2024 from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), fresh foods were 37.9 % of the volume and 40.1 % of the spending on food bought for the home in 2024.

And the label says little. In the EU, the mandatory nutrition declaration is limited to seven values: energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt. Vitamins and minerals usually appear only if the manufacturer chooses to declare them. An app that only reads the label leaves your vitamin panel empty for a large share of what you eat.

vitaloop estimates the full vitamin and mineral profile of a packaged product from its ingredient list. It matches each ingredient in our food database (USDA and ANSES-CIQUAL), estimates the proportions while respecting the percentages the label declares, and adds the result up into the same 42 fields as any other food. Whatever the label does declare always wins over the estimate. Scanning is free; the micronutrient estimate for packaged products is part of Pro.

As far as we know, no other app on this list gives you a panel this complete for packaged products. Fitia also estimates missing values, but sums them up as a daily score rather than showing you the milligrams. More detail in which app calculates the vitamins and minerals in what you eat.

Is there a nutrition app in English, Spanish and Catalan?

Yes: vitaloop. It is not an English app with a translation bolted on, or the other way round. English, Spanish and Catalan are its three native languages, and of the eight apps in this comparison it is the only one whose App Store listing includes Catalan.

  • The AI chat works in all three.Type or say “lentils with chorizo and an apple for lunch”, or the same thing in Spanish or Catalan, and it understands, finds each food and answers in your language.
  • Foods carry their local names. All 1,077 foods and 169 recipes in the catalogue have Spanish and Catalan names, so what you see on the market stall or the menu is what you find in the app: botifarra, mató, calçots, salmorejo.
  • Meal ideas, the weekly report and SmartBite speak the language you choose, and you can switch whenever you like.

Built for Spain from day one

  • Local food. 93 of the 169 recipes in the catalogue are Spanish dishes: xató, suquet, salmorejo, marmitako, trinxat, pulpo a la gallega. Alongside USDA we use the European ANSES-CIQUAL table, the source of 77 foods such as butifarra and Manchego cheese.
  • Supermarket products. Scan the barcode of what you buy and the app looks it up in Open Food Facts, the open database of packaged products. No camera to hand? Type the code.
  • European reference values. 27 of the 42 nutrients have a reference value personalised by age and sex, most of them from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
  • Prices in euros, VAT included. Pro costs €9.90/month or €49.90/year; Max, €14.90/month or €69.90/year.
  • A company in Barcelona. Vitaloop Labs, SL. Your data is stored on servers in the EU and governed by the GDPR.

An assistant that explains what your data shows

Logging is only half of it. vitaloop crosses what you eat with what you measure (sleep, resting heart rate, weight and workouts, synced from Apple Health or Health Connect) and looks for patterns with real statistics: whether afternoon caffeine lines up with worse nights, whether alcohol changes how you recover the next morning, what you eat after a bad night. Before it calls something a pattern, it checks that the difference is larger than your normal day-to-day swing.

Then the assistant digests it for you: a weekly report in your language that explains what it found, which sources back each conclusion and what you could try, with personalised suggestions. It switches on in Pro once you have logged on at least five days in a week.

Other apps have assistants too: Fitia, a chat coach; Cronometer, Crono Coach (Gold); MyFitnessPal, a Coach that is not available in Spain yet. Cronometer also analyses how caffeine, alcohol and food affect your rest, and Lifesum relates your sleep to what you eat. vitaloop goes wider, crossing what you eat with your sleep, weight and other biometrics, and explains it in English, Spanish or Catalan.

Meal ideas, recipes from a URL and SmartBite

Meal ideas that know you

vitaloop's meal ideas start from what you have left for the day (calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate) and from the vitamins and minerals that are below your reference that week, and they respect your allergies, your intolerances and the cuisine you like. Rate each idea with 👍 or 👎. Included in Pro.

Import a recipe from its link

Paste the URL of a recipe from any website, in English, Spanish or Catalan, and vitaloop turns it into your own recipe, with every ingredient linked to our food database and all its nutrients. Included in Pro. Cronometer (Gold) also imports recipes by URL, and so does MyFitnessPal.

SmartBite: what to order at the place next door

Open SmartBite, pick a restaurant nearby, and the app reads its menu and suggests the dishes that best fit what you have left for the day; one tap logs the dish. Because it works from the real menu, the restaurant does not need to be in any chain database: it works for the menú del día bar in your neighbourhood. As far as we know, no other app in this comparison offers anything like it in Spain.

Beyond calories

  • Supplements, built in. A catalogue of 1,065 supplements, label scanning to add a new one (Pro), and what you take in supplements is added to what you eat in the same totals. According to its help centre, MyFitnessPal has no native vitamin or supplement logging and suggests writing them in the diary notes.
  • Everything in one place. Caffeine, water (including tap or bottled, with its calcium, magnesium and sodium), sleep, biometrics and active calories, next to what you eat.
  • Days off. Mark the days you do not want to count, up to a weekly maximum you choose, and they stay out of your goal tracking.
  • Share a meal or a recipe with anyone through a link, with its full composition. Free, and the other person does not have to accept a friend request.
  • Science with sources. Every nutrient comes with information based on published studies, linked to the source, and the app gathers every reference it uses in one place.
